River, Ocean, or Both??

One of the questions we get a lot is whether it is better to do an ocean cruise or a river cruise. Our answer is "yes"!  Or, as I learned in school, "it depends."

Vacationing is an investment in memories and every person values those experiences differently. As travel agents our job is to assist the client in maximizing the value of their vacation dollar. Depending on the specific likes and needs, either cruise could be ideal.

Here are some considerations we discuss with our clients.  For the sake of simplicity, we are comparing a typical European river cruise with an ocean cruise on one of the major cruise lines.

-  Are you willing to fly?  Approximately 50% of Americans live within a 6 hour drive of an ocean cruise port meaning you can start your vacation without having to add flights to your schedule or budget. Taking a river cruise will most likely require you to fly to Europe.

-  Do you have a passport?  While you will NEED a passport for a European river cruise, it is only highly recommended to have one for an ocean cruise. Even if your cruise starts and ends from a US port, it is still recommended to have a passport for international destinations, such as the Bahamas. However, it IS possible to take an ocean cruise without a passport.

-  Do you have any mobility issues?  River cruises typically cannot accommodate wheelchairs. Ocean cruise ships are very large and can tire a person out just walking the length of the ship. They typically have accessible staterooms and are mostly wheelchair accessible.

-  Do you enjoy drinking?   River cruises often include drinks with meals, so your stateroom rate includes meals with drinks. On an ocean cruise, you may be able to purchase a drink package ahead of time so you don't have to pay each time, but you will need to make sure to budget for your beverages above the cost of your cruise.

- Are you traveling with children?  River cruises typically (with the exception of a few Disney river cruises) do not have organized activities for children, but older children are allowed. Ocean cruises are usually well known for having very robust youth programs starting at a very young age through teenagers.

- Are you a foodie?  River cruises often specialize in the local cuisine with fewer choices in a more refined dining environment. Ocean cruises have a much wider variety of dining options, and also offer specialty dining, but you will pay extra for the specialty options.

- Do you want to interact with your fellow passengers?  River cruises are more intimate and the demographics leans towards an older crowd than ocean cruises. There are ocean cruises that foster a similar demographic as river cruises, but most are regarded as much more upbeat, family focused, and activity based.

Either type of cruising provides opportunities for a great experience. River cruises tend to be more focused on the destinations (the ports you will visit) while ocean cruise ships are destinations in and of themselves while still stopping at a few ports along the way.

December is a great time to plan a vacation for the family or surprise your loved ones with a special trip. Cruising packages and itineraries have been released through 2017, so there are plenty of options to choose from and time to prepare.  In addition, deposits are typically refundable until 90 days prior to sailing, so you can book your trip now and spread out your payments.

Contact Trippin' with Jamie before year's end to discuss your next cruise vacation and find the best pricing and availability!

Cruise Planning 101

First-time cruisers typically start a conversation with us in one of two ways:

Client #1 - They want to cruise to a specific destination and just want the cheapest option

OR

Client #2 - They want to try cruising but with so many options, they don't know where to begin.

I was Client #1 on my second cruise.  I was leaving out of Baltimore for spring break with my teenagers.  We were looking for two cabins and I just wanted to do this cheaply.  It turns out we could upgrade from an inside cabin to a balcony for $50 for the week.  The weather cooperated and the balcony was greatly appreciated.

I was Client #2 when I decided to take the family to Alaska.  There are more than 120 Alaska cruises departing during the one week period where everyone's schedules aligned!  The specific itinerary, departure port, stateroom selections, activity and food options, along with duration and cost all factor into determining the best cruise for the experience.  This was when I was glad to be in the travel industry!
In both situations, Trippin' with Jamie can help.  But also in both situations, we need to take a step back and start with a conversation on what is the real desire behind the vacation.

The reality of cruise pricing is that the base fare will be the same no matter who does the booking. While travel agents may have amenities and other perks that make the deal better than what a client can get booking directly with the cruise line, the real value of a travel agent is to match the desire of the client's heart to what is available.

Key Goal:  ** Make the experience as close to what the client is dreaming, given their budget **

Our services do not stop once the cruise is decided.  Excursions are key to experiencing the destination -- especially in Alaska.  Again there are many choices and Trippin' with Jamie can help to sift through the tours to select the best value for every experience.

October is Cruise Month.  This is the BEST time to book -- most cruises can be reserved with a small, refundable deposit.  In some cases 2016 cruises have limited availability and 2017 cruises are available now.  Contact Trippin' with Jamie (TrippinwithJamie@gmail.com or 703-973-1334) for more information!

Mexico - Part 2

Traveling to Mexico and visiting gorgeous hotels sounds like a great job. And it is. But since we saw 7 properties in 2 days it was also a whirlwind. Plus with high heat and humidity it was exhausting. Fortunately all of the resorts provided cool towels at multiple points of the visit, along with cooling drinks, so we had no medical emergencies, although one or two folks did struggle a bit.

All of the resorts had certain things in common:
  • They were all-inclusive with food, beverages, including alcohol, and non-motorized water sports included
  • They all had attentive service
  • The food was exceptional
  • The rooms were large
  • Each resort had multiple wedding venues
  • Each resort had a spa, or access to one very close by
  • They were located in the Riviera Maya, with Cancun as the airport for travel
But there were also significant differences.
  • Four of the hotels allowed kids.  One had an great cooking program and a number of family activities, while several others seemed to really make kids the focus.  Characters such as Sponge Bob, Patrick and the Ninja Turtles were on site and there are Orange Carpet shows with them each week.

  • The adult-only properties did not permit kids (under 18) at any time, even to attend a wedding. So, these properties could not have flower children or ring bearers!
  • The properties that allowed kids had a variety of amenities for them including cribs, high chairs, stuffed animals and other toys.  Jars of baby food were available in the dining venues.
  • Each hotel had its own variety of restaurants. Some of the hotels have exchange privileges between the properties, providing even more choices.
  • Several of the properties did not have elevators.
  • The size and quality of the beach varied.  While the amount of seaweed also varied, the seaweed levels changed daily, so I wouldn't use this as a decision point, when booking a trip.
  • The spas had different themes and some had additional amenities for bridal parties
  • One of the resorts was an all-butler property, while other resorts had personal butlers available for some categories of rooms.
  • Many of the resorts had the option of a swim-up room or a room with an infinity pool, even on the second or third level!

Every hotel we saw was beautiful and top-notch.  Depending on your tastes, family make-up and budget, some of these hotels would be a better fit than others.  Contact me for more details or to match the right hotel to your dream vacation!

Mexico - Part 1

I (Jamie) was in the Riviera Maya the first week in September to visit and evaluate seven different Karisma properties. Karisma is one of the best hotel companies with many all-inclusive offerings including ones for couples, families, and multi-generational groups. They are particularly renowned for their food and detailed wedding planning.

For me the worst part of traveling is getting there. I am a destination and activity person, so it was great that flying from Dulles was a breeze. The non-stop flight left at a respectable time of 9 am and was not full! We boarded quickly and were off! The Cancun airport has very insistent time-share hawkers, but I just ignored them and found my transfer agent who was waiting with a stretch limo for a direct transfer to the resort.

The host property was Generations, about 30 minutes south of the airport in the Riviera Maya. This resort is an all-suite, all-butler hotel designed for multi-generational families. Upon arrival there were cool towels and a glass of champagne for check-in. We boarded golf carts, and with our baggage, were taken directly to the room. Our butler, Leonardo, gave us a tour of the room. It had a king-sized bed and a separate sitting area that had a king-sized sleeper sofa.

The bathroom had a double sink, a Jacuzzi tub, separate toilet, and an accessible rainforest shower. Robes, slippers, an umbrella, and a safe, with charging cable inside, were provided. The mini-bar was restocked every day and had a nice variety of sodas, beer, chips, and candy. The room had a balcony with 2 chairs and a table, a eurolounger, and a wonderful view of the ocean.

The rooms on the lower levels had swim outs or infinity pools.

One of the features of Generations is that you go through a foyer then there are three separate rooms inside. These can be booked individually or together, so there were many options for creating multiple rooms, with multiple bathrooms.

After dropping the bags, we headed to lunch. The hostess asked if anyone had food allergies, then she escorted us to a table. The restaurant has what is called "Full Display" rather than a buffet. It consists of nicely presented small plates that are continuously replaced, ensuring quality and freshness. The individual dishes could be rated good to excellent. The crispy beef and the chocolate brownie tort were outstanding. The salmon had good flavor, but was a bit dry. The vegetable lasagna was very tasty, and the chips and guacamole were what you would see in the States.

After lunch it was off for a short self-tour. The property was beautiful and spotlessly clean. There were outdoor areas for basketball, life-sized chess, and ping pong. The gym, unfortunately, was not a high point for this resort. It had treadmills, bikes, and weights, but was dark, had no view, and overall felt uninviting.

I walked along the beach and there were people cleaning and raking. The east coast of Mexico, along with several other Caribbean destinations has been hit hard this year with Sargassum, a brown seaweed. The resort was constantly fighting the battle to keep it clean. At this particular resort, the beach was small, but relatively clear.

This is an all-inclusive resort, so I got a mudslide at the pool bar, which was well-made and not watered down. The pool was long, by my calculation at least 150, maybe 175 yards, and salt water.

There were tables and stools in the pool and drinks were delivered to the water. At the pool bar there was a drink making demonstration with multiple drinks created and sampling for the audience. The staff seemed to enjoy this.

The resort had a nice feel to it. The staff were friendly and always said "Hola" when they passed you. Service was good and a "thank you" was always answered with "my pleasure." There are butlers for every room as well as beach butlers. The beach butlers bring sunscreen, popsicles, and other items and make sure the king-sized loungers are clean and set-up with sand play toys.

The first night we had a group dinner at Habb, the Mediterranean restaurant.  The first course was Baba Ghanoush and pita, followed by a French Onion soup that had a crouton and little bit of cheese sprinkled on top.  My main course was chicken in a yellow curry sauce with mashed potatoes and two types of rice, with cheesecake for dessert.  Back in the room there were 3 chocolate covered strawberries that were excellent!

There is also Jade, an Asian fusion restaurant and a Wine Bar.

In the morning I went for a run.  Oh yeah, it was 100% humidity and probably close to 80 degrees.  I finished the 7 miles and then discovered I had run at a 9:35 pace, which explained the gasping for air and puddles at my feet!  Breakfast was good with a nice variety of breads, muffins, traditional and Mexican breakfast food.  Gerber jars of food was provided for the babies.

There are a total of 144 rooms at Generations.  This is a nice place for families to stay for a destination wedding.  Each foyer contained 3 rooms, which a maximum occupancy of 2 adults and 2 children, or 6 adults and 6 children for a 3 room suite.  There is a separate lounge, with card and pool tables and snacks, which would be a nice place for teens.

The resort offers special packages when celebrities visit and also the Best Birthday Bash, which is available when at least 2 rooms are booked in a birthday month.  There is a Sky Terrace, which is available for weddings and other functions.

Generations offers celebrity packages (where they bring in a celebrity) and Best Birthday bash.  For BBB must have at least 2 bedrooms booked and it must be in the birthday month.

The Kids program has a large, inviting play area.

There is also a kitchen where they teach cooking lessons, where the kids make food from scratch.  The program is available from 9-5 and 7-9. Children must be 4 to come without parent or babysitter and babysitters are available for an extra charge.

Adults at Generations can use all the facilities at the neighboring El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas Royale.

There are a number of nice deals available, especially if you can travel before the end of the year or during the spring (spring break excluded).  When would you like to go??

Running in Paradise

Those of you that know me, Jamie, know that I am a runner. I run because I love the feeling of accomplishment and how I feel when I'm done. Last week I participated in a 5k "race" during a week-long training session held in Mexico.

The race was called "Running in Paradise." The setting was absolutely beautiful as we ran along a level path in the Riviera Maya, overlooking the ocean. It was late morning (well, for me it was late, 8 am). The birds were singing and the sun was bright. It was also RIDICULOUSLY humid and hot. I registered for this run because it was inexpensive, benefited homeless animals, and I had eaten way too much amazing food. Plus, I got a bright orange shirt.

The run organizers handed out the cotton shirts and said everyone should wear it for the run. I'm guessing it was so the could keep track of us and get good pictures. After a "call-to-post," a yoga-enthusiast got up and led us in some static stretches...I guess the don't-static-stretch-before-you-run philosophy hasn't reached Mexico yet. Then we were off!

Since I had run approximately 15 miles over the previous 2 days, I knew the heat and humidity was not going to be fun. Wearing the cotton shirt certainly didn't help! But I did have a pretty good idea of how hard I could push it. Some folks took off at the start, and as I suspected, they crashed and burned in the humidity. I must admit, one of my character flaws is the pleasure I get fro plodding past the folks that are walking because they went out too fast. Now I am a big fan of PLANNED walking, but I'm talking about the folks who totally blow their pacing, especially when they are young and male.

The course was mostly flat with a very slight uphill, including two "topes" (speed bumps) and a very large ramp (from the ground level to the first floor of the resort, 18 steps) that we had to run over twice. The course passed under the start line and went out about a half a mile further before the final turnaround so I got to see the soon-to-be winner running at a very nice clip. He was from Ireland and clearly handled the humidity just fine. All of a sudden I had a lady on a bicycle leading me. Since there were only a few of us, we would get bicycle escorts at certain points to make sure we didn't go off course. I got to pretend this was a real race and I was following the lead escort! She kept wanting to make conversation. I was actually able to talk a bit so I must not have been running as hard as I thought. Having the bicycle definitely made me run faster to try to catch her. Then she left to escort someone else and I "sprinted" to the finish.

I was the first female and second overall (Full disclosure: I think there were 5 girls and 2 guys total) with a time of 26:55, well off my PR, especially since my Garmin was dead-on at 3.1 miles, and I'm usually over in a race. Considering the conditions, I was pretty pleased. I grabbed a bottle of water, went to my room, changed into a bathing suit, and swam laps in the very long (about 175 yds) salt water pool. Overall a good training day!

Who else wants to do a Run in Paradise??

Fun Dude Ranch Vacations for Families with Special Needs

Horseback riding, campfires under the stars, rustic but comfortable accommodations, incredible scenery...just some of the amenities that dude ranches offer families looking to get away from the busy city life. However, dude ranches can also be on the list of vacation destinations crossed off the list for families with special needs.

Riding solo on a large horse, uneven terrain that is difficult to navigate with a wheelchair, stairs up to a porch that opens into a cozy (read small and not wheelchair accessible) cabin...what makes dude ranches most attractive also is the major turn-off for families with special needs.

However, if a dude ranch has always been on your bucket list, or you just started reading this post and are now hooked, here are two destinations that are dedicated to helping families with special needs enjoy a dude ranch vacation with the whole family.

STAGECOACH TRAILS RANCH

The vision behind this Arizona dude ranch came from a family who had a daughter in a wheelchair. Because of their personal experience with their daughter, the entire ranch is handicapped accessible. The ranch is set up like an old western town but with plenty of modern adaptations to make it accessible for all guests. Every room and bathroom is accessible with a roll-in shower or ADA tub and hand-held shower. All common areas in the lodge and dining room are wide open and easy to navigate in a wheelchair. Horseback riding is offered, and the ranch offers a variety of accommodations for disabilities, such as a mounting ramp for wheelchairs and adaptive equipment. In addition, all wrangles are familiar with therapeutic riding and the horses are evaluated for the proper temperament. Side walkers or a double rider can be provided for riders with balance issues. The pool is accessible and a chair lift provides easy transitions from chair to the water. In the dining room, the chef is willing to accommodate special dietary requirements with advance knowledge. Bonfires, sing-a-longs, and stargazing are just some more of the activities that give guests a rustic dude ranch experience.

SUNDANCE TRAIL GUEST RANCH

Located in Colorado, this dude ranch provides a smaller feel than some of the larger guest resorts. Accommodating only 24 guests at a time, this ranch offers an intimate atmosphere without skimping on the activities. Completely wheelchair accessible and in partnership with a local medical supplier, Sundance aims to provide families with special needs any accommodations they can to allow every family a great vacation. The chefs are comfortable and familiar with accommodating a variety of special diet requirements including, gluten free, vegan, and various allergies. Advance notification is requested to provide each guest with a variety of options each meal. Another unique feature is their accommodation of the four legged family members as well. Well mannered dogs and horses are welcomed along with the human guests to allow the whole family a fun trip.

If either of these sound like your dream vacation or just sparked your interest, give Trippin' with Jamie a call! We look forward to hearing about how we can help you book a trip for you and your family.

Autism Friendly Vacation Spots

Trippin' with Jamie understands that planning vacations is not always easy. There are so many variables and moving pieces, it can seem overwhelming. Add in a family member with autism and the challenges become even more complicated. While traveling with special needs may never be easy, the travel industry has been slowly changing to better accommodate families that may require a bit more planning and preparation. We want to highlight a few vacation destinations that have committed to not just accommodating families dealing with autism, but to helping them have the best vacation possible.

Tradewinds Resort:

Located at St. Pete's Beach on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, this resort provides a great autism-friendly destination without the need for a passport. Going above and beyond for families with special needs, all the staff have been through the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities training and Tradewinds has been designated an Autism Friendly business. Families dealing with autism can request a "safety kit" that provides a door alarm and corner cushions to keep all family members safe. The resort is equipped to handle a variety of special diets and are willing to work with families to make sure everyone is accommodated. The children's program has sensory activities for children with autism and a variety of drop-off programs to allow parents some alone time.

Franklyn D. Resort and Spa:

An all-inclusive located in Jamaica, this resort has been recognized as a top travel destination for families with special needs. Upon arrival, each family is assigned a "nanny" for the entire trip. The nanny is available from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm and can be hired for longer if parents would like an evening out. These nannies can provide an extra set of eyes and hands to allow families to enjoy their vacation and give parents some room to relax. During down times, the nanny will keep the rooms clean and tidy and allow families to enjoy their vacation. Family suites provide space for everyone to spread out and relax, but also keep parents close enough to keep an eye on everyone.

Disney:

Disney has been recognized for years for their impeccable service and willingness to go above and beyond for their guests. This mentality does not waver when it comes to families dealing with autism. For families dealing with autism, Disney offers the Disability Access Service Card that allows families to avoid waiting in long lines. If there is a wait of more than 10 minutes for a ride, the attendant will give the DASC holder a return time which allows the family to wait in the shade, go indoors, or enjoy other aspects of the park. In addition, there are multiple break areas located throughout the park to provide a quiet area for relief from over-stimulation. Companion restrooms are also available in select locations which allow the family member with autism to be accompanied in the restroom if assistance is required.

For families dealing with dietary restrictions, Disney has been known to be one of the most accommodating vacation destinations. While the restaurants in the parks and at the resort are able to accommodate most allergies and restrictions, Disney allows guests with special needs to bring in food as needed. In addition, the hotels located at the resort have staff trained and accommodations in place to help accommodate families with special needs. Easy access to the parks and the ability to take breaks mid-day are only some of the benefits staying at the resort offers.

Royal Caribbean Cruises:

The first to offer Autism Friendly Cruising, Royal Caribbean has become a fantastic vacation choice for families with a family member with autism. All youth staff are specially trained on how to best accommodate children with autism, and there are a variety of additional services available for these special needs families. Priority check-in, boarding, and departure allow for families to avoid large crowds and noise, and the cruise staff are capable of handling a wide range of dietary accommodations.

New in 2014, the cruises have started offering autism friendly movies in a low sensory environment with the ability to move around as needed. A toy lending program as well as autism friendly activities are also available to give families multiple options of fun things to do with the entire family. For children ages 3-11, the youth programs allow children with autism to be placed in ability-appropriate groups rather than by age.

Smugglers' Notch Resort:

Located in Vermont, this 4-seasons resort can be a great vacation destination in any weather for families that have a family member with special needs. Specially trained staff are experienced in a variety of special needs including, decreased mobility and autism spectrum disorders, and are willing to work with families to provide the best possible experience.

This resort has a program called the Smugglers' Notch Adaptive Program that focuses on providing vacation activities for children and adults with special needs and their families. In the summer, the program offers swimming, water slides, hiking, crafts, kayaking, horseback riding, rock climbing, sing-alongs, and more. Children are able to also attend the children's programming with assistance or can be one-on-one by trained staff. All activities are tailored to the individual and they are able to do as little or as much as possible.

In the winter, the Adaptive Program offers children and adults the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard with the assistance of specially trained instructors. Students can be taught one-on-one or with two or more additional instructors if needed. They can also take participate in regular lessons with extra assistance from one of the adaptive instructors. Smugglers' Notch provides adaptive equipment which includes mono-skis, bi-skis, a slider, and snowboarding options.

We hope these vacation destinations has sparked your interest! A variety of options for whatever floats your boat (although if you're not interested in cruising, maybe think about a mountain resort or all-inclusive)! We want to help you find the best option for your family, so give us a call! Maybe one of these is shouting your name, or maybe you have a dream destination you've been wishing you could make work. Either way, give us a call and let us help you plan your next (or first) trip!

10 Things to Avoid Saying to your Travel Agent

I'm sure we've all read at least one of those "Ten things your plumber want you to know" or "Top ten cat breeds for non-cat owners." This is a list that we adapted from a post we read and customized it for Trippin' with Jamie!

1) "I saw this trip for cheap on Groupon!"

Yes, you probably did. But did you look at the fine print? These deals often have blackout dates and other limitations on when you can travel, some are within a certain date of booking. Says it includes airfare? It might, but it's for a 2-layover flight from Houston to Mexico City and you live in DC. Tips, excursions, drinks, not included. Many times even trips that are advertised as all-inclusive still have limitations that would not otherwise apply if you booked through a travel agent. There is a reason the trips advertised on Groupon are so cheap.

2) "Why should I use Trippin' with Jamie when I can just book it online myself?"

If you're talking about ONLY domestic airfare, you're right. Those prices are fixed and a travel agent cannot provide much added benefit. However, if you're flying to a destination and then need a hotel or resort, rental car, excursions, or any other add-ons, using a travel agent CAN provide extra assistance. Trippin' with Jamie are your travel experts. Just like you are perfectly capable of filing your own taxes, many people still choose to use a tax accountant to make sure everything is done properly and nothing slips through the cracks. A travel agent is an expert in the field of travel. We make sure you get the most value for your money and that nothing slips through the cracks. Are you capable of booking your trips online on your own? Yes. But give us the chance to use our expertise to help you maximize the value of your trip and take care of the little details.

3) "I get a discount because we're friends, right?"

Remember, Trippin' with Jamie does not change anything extra to help you plan your trip. While there may be a booking fee for complicated itineraries, that fee will go toward the total cost of the trip. When we book you a trip, the commission that normally would go back to the companies providing your services comes to us as your agent. We do not charge you extra for our services, and because of that, if we were to give a discount, we would have to cover the difference ourselves. We are often able to find you better value than you might on your own because we have access to agent-only deals, so consider that our gift to you!

4) "I am willing to spend $XXX on airfare and no more."

Okay, we will do what we can to find you a flight for that price, but sometimes what we want is not available. Flights with layovers are typically cheaper than non-stop which can save money. Being flexible with departure or destination cities can also provide options to help you save money. However, if you want a non-stop flight from a specific city to your dream destination, there is only so much we can do.

5) "Do you travel all the time?"

We do enjoy traveling! If we didn't like to travel we wouldn't be in the business! That being said, no, we are not taking your calls from a beach resort in the Caribbean. We spend our time in front of a computer focused on our search engines to find you the best deals. Many times we get ideas for our own travel based on the trips that we book for you!

6) "My dream trip is a cruise around Australia and New Zealand with a stop in Hawaii on the way home. I want everything included, and I can spend $3000 total for a family of 5."

Good luck. We are travel agents, and we will do our best to find you the best deal, but we cannot create discounts that are not realistic. If your dream trip and your budget don't line up, then you either need to adjust your expectations or save for a bit longer. We want to help you, but we have not yet found the destination where money grows on trees. Until then, we can only do so much.

7) "I just want the cheapest price."

We are not looking to up-sell you or try to get you to spend more money for no reason. If we suggest something that may not necessarily be the cheapest options, ask us why. Remember, Trippin' with Jamie is about the best VALUE for your money. The cheapest hotel may have really bad reviews, a bed bug problem, and be in a bad part of town. If you're looking for the lowest price, we can certainly book it for you, but there might be another hotel 5 minutes away for not much more that is a much nicer option. We want you to enjoy your trip, so we are looking for value that fits in your budget.

8) "All these custom fees, tips, and luggage charges are ridiculous. There's no way I'm paying that!"

If you don't want to pay luggage fees, don't check a bag. If you don't want to pay daily resort tips, don't choose an all-inclusive resort. If you don't want to pay customs fees, don't travel internationally. There are certain fees in the travel industry that are non-negotiable. We do not set them and cannot change them. The airlines, resorts, and countries set these fees. If you don't want to have to pay these extras, you will need to choose a trip that avoids them.

9) "Can I have your personal cell number so I can contact you whenever anything goes wrong?"

We want you to have the best vacation possible, and we will do everything we can during the planning to ensure your trip goes smoothly. However, we realize that things can go wrong. Trippin' with Jamie will give you an emergency number that can be used to contact us if there are major problems. However, please do not call us for every little issue. Remember, when you are on vacation, you are onsite. We are still in our home office. We want to help as much as we can, but often it is easier for you to talk with the hotel manager yourself.

10) "Thanks for your help in planning! I'm going to book it online tonight."

While we are glad to help and want you to have the vacation you dreamed of, please recognize that at Trippin' with Jamie, our only income comes from booking trips. If you are not going to book through us, we lose money helping you plan since we are taking time away from other clients. The travel industry is a difficult business since there are so many options available to the general public online. If that is the way you would like to book your trip, you are free to do so. But please do not waste our time asking us to spend time to research options for you, then go book elsewhere.

Of course, there is one thing we always want to hear: "Book'em Dano (Jamie)!"

Things Trippin' with Jamie Wants You To Know About Special Needs Travel

Here at Trippin' with Jamie, our main focus is on helping families with special needs take trips that they may have thought impossible. We do our best to make each trip special, and here are some things we want you to know!

1) We can't make it easy, but we can make it easier.

Anyone who tells you that traveling with special needs is easy has obviously never traveled with special needs. Our goal as your travel agent is to get to know you and your needs. We want to help you plan your trip and anticipate any potential problems so they can be avoided.

2) Know your limits and be realistic.

This goes for anyone traveling, but especially families with special needs. If your child can only manage 4 hours of school before having sensory overload, do not plan to cover Magic Kingdom in a day. You can always add more activities, but a physical or mental breakdown can derail an entire trip. Make sure to schedule rest breaks, plan for the weather (hot, cold, rainy, etc.), and be flexible.

3) Look for value not cost.

This is one of the key vacation planning tips for special needs families. There will always be something cheaper. Instead of focusing on strictly cost, look at what you are getting. Yes, hotels further from Disney are cheaper, but if you have a wheelchair, coolers, medications, and emergency information to carry, is it worth it to use valuable energy just packing and getting to the park? Plus, if you are planning to take rest breaks during the day, staying offsite adds more energy zapping travel to and from. Consider the needs of your family and ask us what options are available. We want you to get the most value for your spending, so ask us how you can save while still getting top value.

4) Be prepared to travel with your special need.

We don't mean packing supplies, we mean be mentally prepared. Whether this is your first vacation as a family or the first since a diagnosis, traveling with a special need can require mental preparation as well as physical. While vacations are often used to escape everyday life, there is no escaping your disability or illness. Recognize that your special need will be coming too and be prepared. It may not be the dream trip you always imagined or the same as vacations used to be before getting sick, but it can still be a great time away as long as you adjust your expectations.

5) Relax and have fun!

Easier said than done, we know, but try! You want this to be a great trip and it can be, just relax. By doing your research up front and allowing Trippin' with Jamie to handle the details, you are free to focus on making memories with your family. Know that things may not be perfect for the whole trip but decide to enjoy whatever comes. Traveling with special needs can be unpredictable, but embracing each moment and celebrating small victories can make any trip special.

Off the Beaten Track: Baraboo, WI

When you think vacation, I'm sure most of us think about beaches or cruises or ski resorts or Disney or something exotic. But have you ever considered some of the hidden gems scattered across the country? We will be doing a series called "Off the Beaten Track" to highlight some unique destinations that may not be on your radar that can provide a great trip whether it's a long weekend or full week of family fun!

Up first - Baraboo, Wisconsin!

In case you were wondering, Wisconsin is located in the Midwest, east of Minnesota and directly west of Lake Michigan. It's capital is Madison which is about 270 miles from Minneapolis, 150 miles from Chicago, and 3920 miles from London, England. I know, you're all ready to hop on a plane today and fly all the way from England...If not, that's okay, we can book you on a transatlantic cruise instead. =)

Anyway, we actually want to highlight a town about 50 miles north of Madison. If you guessed Baraboo, you'd be correct!

Baraboo is located along the Baraboo River in Sauk County and is home to about 13,000 residents. Trippin' with Jamie was recently traveling out to Minnesota, but made a stop in Baraboo. It is a great small town to visit with plenty to keep you busy in the town itself, but also has a wide variety of activities within a short drive for the faster paced vacationers. This post is going to highlight some of what Baraboo has to offer you as a vacation destination.

Town Center:

Like I said, Baraboo is a great town in its own right. If you like the small town feel and enjoy being a part of wherever you are visiting, just walking around will give you an opportunity to relax and enjoy being on vacation. There are many locally owned restaurants and shops. Baraboo is small enough to have a great feel and locally owned businesses, but also large enough to offer a great variety. In the summer, there are concerts, farmer's markets, and activities in the town square. During winter, the town is decorated for the holidays and feels just as cozy even if the weather isn't quite as warm.

Circus World Museum:

Did you know Baraboo is home to the Circus World Museum? Did you even know there WAS such a things? It is also the former home of the Ringling Brothers and the Ringling Brothers Theater is located in the town square. This museum is a great (don't tell your kids) educational and fun activity for the whole family. In the summer, the town also hosts the Great Circus Parade. The museum is fully accessible and located close to the river walk along the Baraboo River which also is accessible for those in wheelchairs.

Ochsner Park Zoo:

While not a San Diego Zoo, the Ochsner Park Zoo provides a fun opportunity for families to see animals in a cozy zoo set in the Ochsner Park along the Baraboo River. It is home to a variety of animals, such as monkeys, bears, llamas, multiple species of birds, and more. Admission is free and the zoo is open year round. After you finish the zoo, the park offers lots of green space and trails for hiking, picnics, and enjoying the outdoors. There are paved paths throughout the park that are wheelchair accessible, however, some require stairs to reach. There are picnic tables, benches, grills, and covered shelters for families to enjoy on a summer evening (or winter if you're really brave).

Devil's Lake State Park:

For all the outdoor enthusiasts, Devil's Lake is a state park just south of Baraboo and is the largest state park in Wisconsin. There is a visitor's center that highlights the history and geology of the park and has an amphitheater that is used in the summer for various events and concerts. There are small American Indian mounds located throughout the park which highlight some of the history of the Wisconsin tribes. Approximately 41 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to very difficult terrain provide views of the lake for all levels of fitness. In addition, there are multiple trails that are wheelchair accessible for the entire family to enjoy. Devil's Lake is a destination of its own offering various opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing. There are two swimming beaches located at Devil's Lake as well as kayaks, row boats, and paddle boats available for rent to use on the lake. In the winter, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are available for those brave enough to face the cold.

Mirror Lake State Park:

Another outdoorsy option with a twist. Mirror Lake is home to fully accessible cabins with roll-in showers and some cabins include hospital beds. In addition to offering similar outdoor activities as Devil's Lake State Park, Mirror Lake also offers adaptive kayaks and sit-skis for cross country skiing. It is located just 15 miles from Baraboo and a great option for families looking to get a camping feel while still being able to travel with family members that may require some accommodation.

Wisconsin Dells:

About 18 miles north of Baraboo is a town called the Wisconsin Dells. For all the adventure seekers, this is the place for you! The Wisconsin Dells is one of the largest tourist destinations in the Midwest. It offers many indoor and outdoor waterparks and is home to the largest waterpark in the USA, Noah's Ark. In addition to water activities, the Wisconsin Dells also has go-karting, mini golf, zip lines, horseback riding, and more! Thanks to the many indoor waterparks and other indoor activities, the Wisconsin Dells is a great year-round destination. Great Wolf Lodge offers zero entry pools, and Medusa's Indoor Water Park at Mt. Olympus has a chairlift at the warrior pool to allow the whole family to enjoy the action!

We had a great time visiting Baraboo, and would definitely recommend it as a vacation spot! If you'd love to get away but not sure you're ready for a cruise or resort, check out some of the "Off the Beaten Track" places that you don't even have to leave the country to enjoy!

Why use Trippin' with Jamie?

Some people think the internet has made it possible for anyone to plan a trip.  If all you want to do is go from point A to point B, that is probably true.  But, if you want to maximize your family experience and get the most value for your vacation investment, you would be wise to use an expert. Someone who lives and breathes travel.  Who knows which deals are really good and which deals will really not save you money after all.

And the best part is, you can have this better experience for no additional expense!  Travel agents are paid by the travel companies.  If you book a trip yourself, the travel company simply makes more money, but enlist in the services of a travel professional and you will get their expertise and have someone watching out for your best interest.

Most people don't have the time to learn all the ins and outs of a constantly changing travel industry. Even if you enjoy planning the trip yourself, having a travel professional review and do the final booking will ensure you haven't made any non-refundable mistakes.  After hours of surfing the internet, IAD and IND may look a lot alike, but these airports are more than a 6 hours drive apart!

For those that need more convincing, here are more reasons to use an agent.

FOR FAMILIES THAT HAVE A FAVORITE SPOT TO VISIT EVERY YEAR:

We have resources for you! While you may already have a time share, or figured out where you will stay, what about excursions nearby? Even traditional family trips can be spiced up with some new adventures. Maybe you've always wanted to try parasailing, or have been dying to visit the local amusement park, whatever it may be, Trippin' with Jamie can help you add some excitement to your relaxing family trip.

FOR FAMILIES THAT KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO GO:

When you have a specific destination in mind, a travel agent can be a valuable resource in helping you finalize the details of your trip. We have access to deals that are not available in normal searches, and often can find or create packages for your and your family for your chosen vacation. Whether you want the full Disney experience, a cruise to Alaska, or a relaxing all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya, give Trippin' with Jamie a call to see what specials are running and packages we can bundle for you.

FOR FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:

Whether you have a family member on the autism spectrum, need wheelchair accessibility, have significant food allergies, or any other special needs, Trippin' with Jamie wants you to know that travel IS POSSIBLE. It may not be easy, but with the help of our experienced consultants, we CAN help make it easier. Give us a call to talk about what options are available and what type of trip may best suit your needs. If you have specific concerns about a bucket list trip you have always wanted to take but thought it was not an option, we can help make it happen!

FOR ANYONE AND EVERYONE ELSE:

Don't worry, we didn't forget about you! We can also help with planning just about any type of trip you can imagine, from cruises to skiing to safaris. We help plan honeymoons, destination weddings and vow renewals as well as multi-generational family reunions.  We book rooms for business travel, and coordinate hotel accommodations for out of state medical care. Whatever your travel needs, Trippin' with Jamie is here to help! Give us a call so that we can discuss your particular needs.

For those of you that read the first paragraph and now skipped to the bottom, I'll summarize what I said above. Regardless of your needs, Trippin' with Jamie can make your trip planning easier. Give us a call to find out how we can help with your specific plans!

Introducing Trippin' with Jamie!

Thank you for visiting! We hope to hear from you soon to book your next vacation. In the mean time, let me introduce you to the face behind Trippin' with Jamie.

Jamie began Trippin' with Jamie after leaving a long corporate career in in risk analysis and management in the mortgage industry.  She wanted to take her love to travel and use it to make a difference in the lives of others.  Her goal as a travel agent is to help families build stronger bonds and lasting memories that include all family members regardless of their special needs.

A mom of two adult children, she has been planning vacations since her children were small. She continues to plan family get-a-ways, that now include her son-in-law. With trips to more than 20 ski resorts, all-inclusives, cruises on multiple cruise lines, dude ranches, beach and lake house rentals and of course Disney, she has a breadth of understanding in the industry.

Her passion for special needs grew after her daughter struggled with a mystery ailment for many years that included, among other things, severe allergic reactions.  Vacations became complicated with a great deal of pre-work required.  Still determined to enjoy family trips, Jamie found ways for her family to travel even with their special needs. As she became more integrated into the special needs community, she wanted to leverage her knowledge and experience to help those families experience what many others take for granted. While she knows that travel with special needs may not be easy, she aims to make it easier by reducing the stress of planning and coordinating details to find the best value for her clients.

When she is not booking trips (call today!) or traveling herself, she enjoys distance running and triathlons, spending time with her husband and 2 dogs, fostering dogs for a local rescue organization, and chocolate!
